Our mission is to provide all adults the opportunity to improve the quality of their lives through literacy.
We are a volunteer tutor program that provides assistance in Adult Basic Education, or ABE, in reading, writing, and math. We also work with learners of English as a learned/second language (ELL/ESL) and GED preparation. All of our programs are free to residents in and around Tazewell County.
In 1985, the literacy program started as an English Language program for a group of local immigrants. Through the dedication of a long line of strong leaders and funding from many contributors and grant providers, it exists today as the YWCA of Pekin Adult Literacy Program.
Currently, the Adult Literacy Program is made possible by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a division of the Office of the Secretary of State, using state funds designed for literacy. In addition, we thank Dollar General Literacy Foundation for funds granted for our GED preparation program.
The Adult Literacy Program works with adults to assess their literacy, match them with a volunteer tutor, and provide each learner with individualized plans and tools to reach their goals!
The YWCA of Pekin Adult Literacy Program works with many of the area libraries and community partners to enhance the lives of adult learners.
We work to meet our learners wherever they are in their learning journey. A simple intake appointment will get you started!
We will help match you to a tutor and provide the tools you need to help you meet your learning goals!
